From the History of Modernism: Ioseb Gabashvili [National Gallery]
Within a month, the Dimitri Shevardnadze National Gallery exhibited for the first time the work of the Georgian modernist artist, Ioseb Gabashvili (1908-1973), as fully as possible. The exhibition spanned four decades - from the 1920s to the 1950s - with over 200 works by the author in a variety of media: painting, graphics, book illustration, film and theater painting.
Ioseb Gabashvili is a representative of the second generation of modernist artists, who started working in the first period of the Soviet Union - in the 1920s. The Tbilisi avant-garde of the 1910s is virtually non-existent at this time. The work of artists is controlled on the one hand, and on the other hand it seems to have maintained freedom. The fact that the "period of silence" will begin soon will appear in the late 1920s. The 1930s, especially its second half, will clearly confirm this trend.
The exhibition "From the History of Modernism: Ioseb Gabashvili" aims to present the artist, still unknown to many, artistic heritage, to promote the study of his work in the modernist context and thus to begin the process of expanding the boundaries of Georgian fine modernism.
The book "Ioseb Gabashvili" will be presented in the National Gallery store, which combines research on the life and work of the artist, works preserved in various museums and private collections, and archival material, most of which were first published.
