At the Crossroads [National Gallery]

2014

The retrospective exhibition of the two artists combines different spaces and times, where works are presented on different conceptual and artistic grounds.

Levan Choghoshvili's works will present two series created in opposition to communist ideology during the Soviet period - "Venus and Marx" and "Destroyed Aristocracy". Their creation was conceptually completed 20 years ago. The author's works were first exhibited only in 1985, because before that they were perceived as bourgeois modernism, a socio-cultural view and irony opposite to social realism.

Darejan Berekashvili is a Georgian, a descendant of a first-generation Georgian emigrant working in France. The exhibition will feature his works, the creation of which the author began 20 years ago, after the collapse of the Soviet Empire and the breakdown of borders. Darejan Berekashvili works on the sculpture and creates stylized, elongated, kenar characters. He works on plaster, clay and then casts the best work among them in bronze. The works of art created by the author in the last twenty years are based on a strong will to get closer to its history, Georgian reality and culture.
