exhibition “Shaping Identity”

2016

On December 24, 2016 Georgian National Museum, Tbilisi History Museum, within the frame of the project “Contemporary Art Gallery” invites you to the opening of the exhibition “Shaping Identity”.

Project “Contemporary Art Gallery” aims to support and promote contemporary art in Georgia, fosters opportunities for Georgian contemporary art to be shown locally, regionally and internationally.

This time Tbilisi History Museum will host the exhibition of young Georgian artists “Shaping Identity”, which was already shown in June, 2016 in Kiev Art Week and was the first show within the frame of the project “Contemporary Art Gallery”.

The exhibition focuses on new emergent artists in Georgia, showing the continuing vitality and level of experimentation in its contemporary art today. We can see with the work how experimentation with material and subjects can be viewed as distinct responses to a country which has gone through a massive changes since the fall of the Soviet Union and the successful resistance to a Russia invasion in 2008.

Exhibition draws together seven Georgian artists, who work in Georgia and abroad: Levan Mindiashvili, Ana Chaduneli, Tamar Mchedlishvili, Davit Meskhi, Giorgi Tabatadze, Nino Ziraqashvili, Gio Sumbadze.

Each artist presents his particular world, where people play out their dreams in the communal and private spaces of a country in transition. The need and possibility of experimentation represents a culture in the process of shaping its distinct identity.

The project “Contemporary Art Gallery” is implemented with a support and supervision of Ministry of Culture and Monument Protection of Georgia.
