Web-exhibition “Man With a Webcam | Digital Oases”

2020

“It’s obvious, the world’s never going to be as it was…” - this was part of the text from the 2019 exhibition “Post.Digital.Dreams”; The point of view once dictated by creative impulses became reality in just a couple of months. Suddenly we found ourselves in digital “heavens” of physical isolation - virtual interaction became a vital necessity. Processes, caused by the pandemic, played a crucial role in exposing acute defects of the world’s sociopolitical matrix.

Making a choice is inevitable - we check, we make sure to know what is going on around us, and then - either trust or criticize; follow eternity of hyperlinks, till our making of choices becomes as absurd as the real world itself.

What is the quality of our reasoning and reaction in relation to these conditions? What is our creative role during the crisis? It is a fact that web and digital interaction formed a new configuration of human’s psycho-physical behavioral modality - a human in front of the screen… a human with a video eye.

The exhibition studies creative possibilities and boundaries of the web as a medium and a space in relation to existing territorial and global contexts.

Web-exhibition “Man With a Webcam | Digital Oases” is a project of the Goethe-Institut Georgien and the platform “In-between Conditions”.

Conceived during the pandemic, the web-exhibition unites 33 artists and their 18 works created during self-isolation. The exhibition works try to provide answers to the chain of changing circumstances that overwhelmed the world unexpectedly.

“Man With a Webcam | Digital Oases” is a first comprehensive and simultaneously - experimental attempt in Georgia to integrate works and the exhibition into a digital space. Therefore, all of the participant projects were created particularly for the web environment, representing search for new forms and methods in Georgian art domain.
