Konstantin Mindadze - "Portal Paintings"
"My idea behind the creation of Portal Paintings was a combination of painting, sculpture and movement.
I believe the same basic core essence had Marcel Duchamp’s video – “Anemic Cinema 1926”. In order to reinvestigate those three basics, but in my case I decided to give it more monumental and maximum exact form. Arranging circles by logarithmic spiral progression and adding color gradations gave it depth, which creates feeling of some kind of doorways or gates disappearing into darkness of infinity. Choosing circular shaped surface gives those paintings a sculptural form, which redefines and expands even small spaces even more and deeper. With no machinery used, challenging and time consuming criteria’s such as maximum solidness, exactness, calculations and attention to smallest details where still essential parts like in my past “fragmentation” oeuvre. However process at the beginning felt mechanical like perseveration, but then it gained a sort of meditative trance – hypnotic mood. Building up very slowly, understanding each color tone once again and trying to go even in-between is what gives each composition a three dimensional effect without actually being three dimensional. Each color portal reflects its own mood; yellow reflects solar warmth, blue has the oxygen, emerald green has the aqua tones, violet has its own mystery, grey is very quiet but very real and red has heaviness, vividness and alert because I ended up where pink supposed to begin.
Looks like I don’t have my favorite color anymore – I value all of them, but only as separated entities.
It will be futile going any further - marking every experienced detail, because I want to leave for viewers a space for their interpretation as well, by exploring all six pieces together in one show."
