Irakli Gamrekeli - H2SO4

2018

Gamrekeli Gallery presents gala exhibition of Irakli Gamrekeli - H2SO4, in the frame of  TAF • Tbilisi Art Fair, which will be held on may 19 at 19:00 pm.

The modern art one of the smallest Country, Georgia is incredibly interesting. Tbilisi was unbelievably special in the beginning at the XX century, where different and irreconcilable eastern and western culture and habits simultaneously existed. Georgian modern art of that time along with leading European Avant-garde created it’s own unique form.

Irakli Gamrekeli one of the founders of Georgian Theatre painting created an epoch in the history of stage painting. He was the founder of futurism and modernism in Georgian scenography. His first steps was made by the big support of Kote Marjanishvili, who saw Oscar Wilde’s “Salomea” illustrated by Irakli Gamrekeli. In these paintings he already had his own and different style, where his sharp interest of the Avant-garde style was vivid.

Irakli Gamrekeli’s works are expressive with sharp plastic, dematerialized figures, with dramatic elongated lines, which brings much more tragism and sadness to the paintings, these features along with local color recalls associations with German Expressionism.

In 1924 he has illustrated the one and only issue of the futuristic magazine “H2SO4”.

Irakli Gamrekeli’s sketches are fantastic, constructions with it’s own abstract rhythm and bold color matches brings exceptional form of each painting.

*The exhibition will be on the view till June 19
